Each year at Onam, the calm, idyllic backwaters of Kerala turn into a churning battleground of skill and stamina. The Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race is the biggest boating event in the world, showcasing the traditional snake boat or vallam kali. Up to a hundred people in each boat shoot it forwards through the water in an act that's as beatuifully synchronised as it is hypnotic. The race is hotly contested, with the winner taking all the glory. It's a sight to behold, and Harman Singha was there, to take it all in.
